From healthcare assistant to therapist: a seven-year journey at Priory

After seven years at Priory Hospital Woking, Anna has progressed through a range of roles to become a qualified Cognitive Behavioural Therapist and DBT facilitator. In this blog, she shares her career journey, the fulfilment she finds in supporting meaningful change, and the value of working within a collaborative multidisciplinary team.

1. What is your role at Priory, and what do you enjoy most about it?

I am primarily a Cognitive Behavioural Therapist (CBT) and also facilitate the Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) group programmes offered by our practice. I provide therapeutic support to individuals presenting with a range of challenges and difficulties. I find great fulfilment in helping clients achieve positive outcomes and make meaningful improvements in their lives. Additionally, I value the collaborative nature of working within a multidisciplinary team, which enhances both the effectiveness and enjoyment of my role.

2. How has your career progressed since joining Priory?

I have worked within the Priory Group for the past seven years, during which I have gained a broad range of experience across multiple departments. I began my career as a Healthcare Assistant, where I developed a strong foundation in patient care and support. Following this, I transitioned to the Admissions Department, where I gained valuable insight into the operational and administrative aspects of patient intake and referral processes.

I then joined the therapy team, initially working as a Therapy Assistant, supporting qualified therapists in delivering patient-centred care and treatment. I then progressed to the role of Trainee Therapist before successfully completing my training and currently practice as a fully qualified Therapist within the team.

3. What opportunities have helped your development at Priory?

In each of the roles I have undertaken, I have consistently received strong support from my managers. Every department places a clear emphasis on the various career opportunities available within the Priory, offering guidance and assistance to help employees achieve their professional goals.

Working at the Priory provides invaluable experience, particularly in expanding knowledge of mental health and healthcare. When I pursued my Master’s degree in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), I applied for and was granted funding from the Priory to support my training. This investment enabled me to further develop my skills and advance my career within the organisation.

4. What advice would you give to someone considering a career at Priory?

Overall, the Priory is an excellent workplace that provides a wide range of opportunities for personal and professional growth. It is especially well-suited for individuals who are passionate about helping others, have a strong interest in mental health, and are eager to pursue ongoing training and development. Additionally, those who thrive in dynamic and challenging environments will find the Priory to be a rewarding and fulfilling place to contribute their skills and make a meaningful impact.
