Job Advert Role Description


This is a part time position providing leadership and psychiatric clinical care to rehabilitation unit.  The site is led by a Senior Management Team (SMT) consisting of a Hospital Director (who is the Registered Manager), a Director of Clinical Services and a Support Services Manager. You will form part of the SMT in leading the site in high quality care for all patients as well as taking on the Responsible Clinician for inpatients under your care.

The Site

Priory Hospital Hemel Hempstead is a well-regarded independent sector 38 bedded Longer-term High Dependency Rehabilitation inpatient unit that strives to provide the highest standards of care. There are three wards within the hospital: a fifteen bedded male rehabilitation unit, a twelve bedded female rehabilitation unit and an eleven bedded ward for people with cognitive impairment and challenging behaviour.

The majority of our service users have treatment-resistant psychosis or cognitive impairment (dementia/ABI) with challenging behaviours.  All patients are placed by the NHS, with an expected length of stay of between one to five years.

There is an extensive MDT, including psychologist, OT and part-time physical health nurse, with visiting SLT, dietician and GP on a weekly.

The hospital is located in beautiful and tranquil surroundings, within minutes of the M25 and A41. It is also situated a short tax-ride (approximately 3 minutes) from Hemel Hempstead train station.

The Post Holder will also hold clinical responsibility (remotely) for Priory Hospital Heathfield.

The Priory Hospital Heathfield is a 24-bed hospital which provides individualised rehabilitation programmes for males and females aged 18-years and over in a safe and supportive environment. The hospital specialises in the care and treatment of patients with severe and enduring mental health disorders who may also have comorbid/complex physical health needs and neuro-degenerative conditions.

The multidisciplinary team (MDT) which comprises medical staff, nurses and therapists (for example occupational therapists and physiotherapists) focus on helping the patient to develop skills for independence and helping the patient to learn new ways of managing their condition and symptoms, while assisting them to reintegrate where possible back into the community.

Medical Director

  • To provide clinical and management leadership at site as part of the Senior Management Team
  • To lead organisational change where required to ensure the highest standard of care
  • To attend, and contribute to, the monthly Clinical Governance Meeting as well as monthly Business Review meeting
  • To provider supervision and support for other consultant psychiatrists at St John’s House, through 1:1 or group supervision (as well as local satellite sites)
  • To ensure oversight of mandatory training targets within the medical department
  • To ensure oversight of the Medicine’s Management processes at site in conjunction with the site pharmacist
  • To help implement the Priory Group Physical Health Strategy in conjunction with the physical health nursing team
  • To ensure a meaningful presence at the local Provider Collaborative Network and contribute to the quarterly Priory Forensic / LD Network meetings
  • To be actively involved in medical recruitment at site when required and to undertake job planning as necessary according to site / individual need

Consultant Psychiatrist

  • The Consultant will deliver direct interventions to inpatients including assessment, diagnoses and treatment of mental and physical health needs.
  • The Consultant will supervise the medical team that provides medical care and act as RC for detained inpatients.
  • Medical legal role for inpatients. This will include the preparation of MHA Tribunal and other reports and attending MHA Tribunals
  • Responsible for the mental health care of all inpatients through daily ward reviews, attending the ward daily themselves Monday to Friday
  • The Consultant has a duty to collaborate with key personnel to ensure the smooth transition through any changes in the care pathway. The consultant will also be involved in conducting pre-admission assessments to determine suitability of patients for placement at the hospital.
  • Opportunity to be involved in clinical audit, patient safety projects and clinical governance standards and monitoring for the delivery of the service
  • This post is supported by a Specialty Doctor
  • To participate in 2nd on call rota.

The successful candidate will require:

  • MRCPsych qualification or equivalent
  • Fully registered with the GMC with a license to practice at the time of appointment.
  • Included on the GMC Specialist Register OR within six months of gaining CCT in General Adult Psychiatry
  • Approved under section 12(2) of the MHA 1983
  • Has Approved Clinician status under the MHA 1983 / is eligible to work as a Responsible Clinician
  • Experience of assessing and treating patients in an inpatient setting.
  • Knowledge and evidence of participation in CPD.
  • Evidence of effective multidisciplinary team involvement.
  • Awareness of current issues in mental health service provision, policy and legislation.
