Job Advert Role Description


This is a full time position (37.5 hours a week) providing leadership and psychiatric clinical care to Priory Ty Catrin, a hospital that provides specialist treatment for males and females within a low secure setting. The site is led by a Senior Management Team (SMT) consisting of a Hospital Director (who is the Registered Manager), a Director of Clinical Services and a Support Services Manager. You will form part of the SMT in leading the site in high quality care for all patients as well as taking on the Responsible Clinician role for inpatients under your care.

The Site

Priory Ty Catrin is a specialist low secure service (capacity of 45 beds), situated around 15 minutes from Cardiff in the Vale of Glamorgan, South Wales. The hospital provides assessment and treatment services for individuals with mental disorder and associated challenging behaviors, who are detained under the Mental Health Act 1983, and who require support and supervision within a secure environment.  

The core function of the service is to complete a full and comprehensive assessment of need, working closely with the individual service user, using a multi-disciplinary approach to developing a thorough care and treatment package, risk assessment documentation based on the assessment of need, and an ongoing review of this package using the Care Programme Approach.

By adopting this standard, the clinical teams are constantly working towards the ultimate aim of successfully discharging individuals to less secure environments, such as rehabilitation services, or returning individuals to their local communities.   The clinical teams also work very closely with local service providers, individual patients’ community nurses, social workers and other external professionals to facilitate a timely return to less secure environments, as dictated by the individual’s progress through the assessment and treatment process.

Medical Director

  • To provide clinical and management leadership at site as part of the Senior Management Team
  • To lead organisational change where required to ensure the highest standard of care
  • To attend, and contribute to, the monthly Clinical Governance Meeting as well as monthly Business Review meeting
  • To provider supervision and support for other consultant psychiatrists at Priory Ty Catrin through 1:1 or group supervision (as well as those consultants at selected local satellite sites)
  • To ensure oversight of mandatory training targets within the medical department
  • To ensure oversight of the Medicine’s Management processes at site in conjunction with the site pharmacist
  • To help implement the Priory Group Physical Health Strategy in conjunction with the physical health nursing team
  • To ensure a meaningful presence at the quarterly Priory Forensic Network meetings
  • To be actively involved in medical recruitment at site when required and to undertake job planning as necessary according to site / individual need

Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist

As an Approved Clinician who is also on the Specialist Register for either Forensic Psychiatry or General Adult Psychiatry (but be able to demonstrate your experience within the forensic psychiatry).

You will lead a multidisciplinary team in providing care for patients on your caseload. This will involve:

  • Acting as Responsible Clinician for inpatients detained under the Mental Health Act under your care
  • Being an Approved Clinician under the Welsh framework (or have plans to become so)
  • Assessing patients referred to the service by NHS- Wales, NHS-England or Provider Collaboratives, ensuring that they meet the admission criteria of the service
  • Ensuring that admissions are planned with input from the MDT
  • Coordinating physical health care plans with the onsite physical health nursing team
  • Ensuring that you are front and centre of monthly MDT review meetings and CPA meetings and CTRs as required
  • Attend Mental Health Review Tribunals / Hospital Manager’s Hearings and prepare psychiatric reports for those hearings.
  • Supporting the MDT to make safe decisions for the onwards pathway of any patients under your care
  • Ensure that you maintain positive, open and transparent lines of communication with all external stakeholders
  • Undertake being part of an on call system that covers Ty Catrin and other local sites
