Job Advert Role Description

Unsted Park School is a specialist residential and day school/6th form college for children and young people with high functioning Autistic Spectrum Disorders and common associated diagnosis and associated needs.  We are committed to providing the highest level of education and care in a safe, positive environment that enables each individual to achieve his or her maximum potential.

The focus of the whole school approach is in three core areas: education, independence and inclusion. Based on these core areas we provide individual, child-centred programmes which recognise individual abilities and strengths and help students to reach their full potential.

We are looking for an innovative and dynamic person, who will take a major role in formulating the strategic aims and objectives of the school; developing policies for achieving these aims and objectives and driving through the implementation across the school. They will need energy and drive, a strong sense of moral purpose, and the ability to inspire the team to achieve the highest standards to ensure best outcomes for pupils.

 The role will have a pastoral focus, working with an established pastoral & behaviour team who work across the whole site from KS2 to post 16.

Under the direction of the headteacher, the Deputy will:

  • Support with the day-to-day management of the school
  • Communicate the school’s vision compellingly and support strategic leadership.
  • Lead by example, holding and articulating clear values and moral purpose, focusing on providing excellent education for all pupils.
  • Build positive relationships with all members of the school community, showing positive attitudes to them and keep up to date with any developments in education and have a good knowledge of education systems locally, nationally and globally.
  • Seek training and CPD to ensure their own personal and professional development.
  • Be pro-active in the admissions process and how students gain entry to the school.
  • Demand ambitious standards for all pupils, instilling a strong sense of accountability in staff for the impact of their work on pupil outcomes.
  • Ensure excellent teaching in the school, including through training and development for staff.
  • Establish a culture of ‘open classrooms’ as a basis for sharing best practice.
  • Create an ethos within which all staff are motivated and supported to develop their skills and knowledge.
  • Identify emerging talents, coaching current and aspiring leaders.
  • Hold all staff to account for their professional conduct and practice.
  • Student progress and attainment oversight

Systems and processes:

Under the direction of the headteacher:

  • Ensure that the school’s systems, organisation and processes are well considered, efficient and fit for purpose.
  • Provide a safe, calm and well-ordered environment for all pupils and staff, focused on safeguarding pupils and developing exemplary behaviour.
  • Implement systems for managing the performance of all staff, addressing any underperformance, supporting staff to improve and valuing excellent practice.
  • Support strategic, curriculum-led financial planning to ensure effective use of budgets and resources.
  • Support distribution of leadership throughout the school.
  • Teacher / unqualified teacher learning walks / formal observation schedules.
  • Oversight of probationary periods and NQT / those seeking to gain QTS
  • Model entrepreneurial and innovative approaches to school improvement and leadership.
  • Inspire and influence others to believe in the fundamental importance of education in young people’s lives and to promote the value of education

Other areas of responsibility:

  • The Deputy Headteacher will be required to safeguard and promote the welfare of children and young people, and follow school policies and the staff code of conduct.  This means undergoing safeguarding training up to the level of site safeguarding lead (DSL)
