Job Advert Location Description

Priory Hospital Lincolnshire is a low secure unit for males with mental illnesses and personality disorders. Located in Gainsborough in Lincolnshire, the hospital has 28 beds to support those who are detained under the Mental Health Act.

The hospital was rated good during the last CQC inspection in March 2019. 

Our service consists of two wards:

  • Lancaster – 14-bedded ward for males who require stabilisation and support to decrease their levels of challenging behaviour.
  • Scampton – 14-bedded ward providing continuing care with a focus on rehabilitation, community reintegration and preparing the person to move further along the care pathway, or to community living

Priory Hospital Lincolnshire provides a full treatment pathway for those requiring rehabilitation, and we focus on patients learning new skills, embedding these in everyday life, progressing to maintenance of skills that are necessary for community living, as well as reducing risk behaviours and promoting health and quality of life.

There is a continued emphasis on the rights of patients, their quality of life and promotion of independence that enhances the patient experience and prepares them for community living.

This will be achieved by:

  • Thorough assessment of individuals needs throughout admission
  • Person centred collaborative treatment plans
  • A range of interventions available from a diverse MDT

The Job Opportunity

A unique opportunity to work in a unit where extensive medical support is offered to the patients. As a Specialty Doctor you will work closely with the Consultant Psychiatrist to provide medical cover on a daily basis to the patients on the ward.

The successful applicant will join an established MDT on the unit, which includes a psychologist, an OT, and social worker. The maximum caseload is 28, and this is consistent with consultant-led specialist service with Specialty Doctor support. 

Alongside the Consultant, you will care for the patients, referred to the unit usually from forensic settings.  During working hours, you will be responsible for reviewing the mental and physical state of patients throughout the working week.      

Other duties include:

  • Assessment, appropriate investigation, diagnosis and treatment under Consultant supervision of inpatients. Each patient must be interviewed and reassessed at a frequency appropriate to their individual clinical needs and sufficient to monitor changes and make timely modifications to the treatment plan.
  • Good communication with ward staff, including morning handovers daily.
  • To participate in treatment plans and programmes as appropriate to ensure good medical practice within the MDT settings.

General working hours are Monday to Friday 9:00 – 17:00 and you will join the oncall acute rota in the East Midlands.


  • Full GMC registration
  • 12 months’ adult psychiatry experience
  • Relevant experience within a similar setting (preferred although not essential)
  •  Approval under Section 12 of the Mental Health Act (preferred although not essential)
  • Excellent knowledge of the Mental Health Act 1983 (2007) and Code of Practice along with Mental Capacity Act 2005 and Code of Capacity
  • The ability to interview, assess and treat patients and write clear comprehensive medical notes
  • Proven record of CPD
  • Desirable: Membership of Royal College of Psychiatrists, Physicians, General Practitioners or equivalent
