The Priory Hospital Southampton is part of the Priory group offering outpatient, day care and inpatient treatment for a wide range of mental health difficulties. The hospital is located in Marchwood on the outskirts of Southampton and comprises 40 inpatient beds across three wards. 

Sandpiper Ward: This is an acute admissions unit comprising 17 beds.  Skylark Ward:  11 bedded specialist eating disorders Unit Kingfisher Ward:  12 bedded CAMHS inpatient unit

The hospital has a combination of employed and visiting consultants and well established multidisciplinary teams in all wards including nursing, therapy, occupational therapy and psychology input. The non-consultant doctors in the hospital include three full-time specialty doctors and one full-time resident Medical Officer. 

The hospital provides a combination of NHS funded and private care and has been rated as “Good” in recent CQC inspection with “outstanding” rating in the” caring” domain.

This is 1WTE substantive post equivalent to 10 PAs which has become available because of current post holder leaving to pursue further training. The job involves providing specialty doctor support to Sandpiper ward, which is an acute admissions ward. The ward has support from the full MDT including therapy, psychology, occupational therapy and provides a distinctive individual and group therapy programme. Majority of acute inpatients are from the local area. There is a small number of NHS patients from outside Hampshire and some private patients. 

The consultant input to the ward is provided by Dr Megan Roberts (0.6 WTE) and Dr James Stallard (0.4 WTE). 

The post is supported by a resident medical officer who would be supervised by the post holder.  

There are no on call commitments associated with this post.

Responsibilities of the role are as follows:

1. Routine psychiatric care and management planning for inpatients

2. Joining daily morning handover meetings at 9 am, MDT reviews and CPA meetings

3. Working in collaboration with MDT to monitor day to day progress and evaluation of treatment plans as needed

4. Completion of risk assessments and liaison with families and community services as required

5. Ensure MDT completion of agreed treatment plans

6. Completion of discharge summaries within 7 days of the discharge

7. Leading the provision of care in the absence of the named consultant (Cross covering consultant will have consultant responsibility and will be available for telephonic advice if needed. However, the post holder is expected to manage day to day care of patients when named consultant is on leave)

8. There will be occasions when in the interests of clinical and operational reasons, post holder may be required to cover other clinical duties in the hospital or provide cross cover for colleagues for unforeseen absences.

9. Preparation of tribunal/hospital managers reports and attending the hearing if agreed by the consultant or in consultant’s absence

Support for the Post holder

1. The post holder would have access to weekly supervision from a named consultant

2. The hospital has an active monthly clinical forum which is well attended. The post holder would be a member of the forum and would participate in case based discussions.

3. There and established peer group to support with revalidation and appraisal which post holder would be welcomed to join.

4. Priory supports continuing professional development and access to study leave with associated expenses is available via centrally allocated budget and approval system. 

5. There is weekly peer supervision group meeting attended by specialty doctors and consultants in the hospital.

6. There would be an opportunity to develop a range of non-clinical skills by participating in clinical governance framework of the hospital. 

Annual leave

1. The post holder will have 25 days of annual leave in addition to bank holidays

Person Specification

Essential Criteria Current GMC registration with license to practice Clinical skills and competencies consistent with the experience of two years in psychiatry

Desirable Criteria Section 12 approval Experience of working in inpatient psychiatric settings

We will consider a candidate with exceptional clinical, organisational and communication skills who may not otherwise meet the threshold for experience in psychiatry. 

The successful candidate will be required to apply for a disclosure at the enhanced level from the Disclosure and Barring Services.
