Priory Hospital Middleton St George is an independent and private hospital based in the North East of England and is part of the Healthcare division of Priory Group. We are one of the 36 hospitals in the North Region of Priory Healthcare. Despite its rural location, it is located close to all major travel routes.

Priory Hospital Middleton St George offers a wide range of therapeutic and recovery focused interventions, which is delivered by a team of skilled professionals in a calm and therapeutic environment. The specialist services offered on site include two specialist DBT adherent units, two high dependency rehabilitation and recovery units for males and females and a mixed acute in-Patient mental health unit. The Hospital also has a Community House which provides long stay rehabiltation for people with complex mental health needs.

The hospital enjoys a stable and established MDT which includes OT, psychology and experienced RMN's.  The hospital offers a range of treatments and interventions including promoting least restrictive practice and patient collaboration in decision making. The service works closely with other Priory Healthcare services within the region enabling and developing supportive care pathways

We are opening two new purpose-built, state of the art, single sex Adult Psychiatric Intensive Care Units, which will become operational in March 2019.

Each PICU will have a dedicated full-time consultant psychiatrist and a comprehensive MDT.  We are therefore seeking the services of an experienced and highly motivated Consultant Psychiatrist to deliver timely and high quality care to adults with acute mental disorders. 

Job Advert Role Description

This post is for a General Adult Psychiatrist for a 10 -12 bed Female PICU at Priory Hospital, Middleton St George, Darlington, County Durham, DL2 1TS.


The Consultant Psychiatrist will work as part of a Multi-Disciplinary Team, providing clinical leadership and medical expertise.  The MDT will aim to deliver excellent bespoke, holistic, and recovery-focused care to enable patients on the unit to fulfil their recovery goals and have the life they want following discharge. 


The Consultant Psychiatrist is responsible for leading the medical care of patients in their allocated caseload, and supervising their allocated Advanced Practitioner.  The Consultant Psychiatrist has a key role in leading the team to provide evidence-based treatment, and always putting the patient at the centre of the team’s approach.   The medical model of care is a consultant-led service.


The Adult PICU will accept admissions 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, nationally across all parts of the United Kingdom. Usually patients referred to PICU may present with high levels of acuity, underlying co-morbidities and high risk of harm to self and others.


The successful candidate will be joining an expanding and clinically diverse Region (Priory North).  There is strong governance within the Region and the successful applicant will be expected to take an active role in service and quality development and to participate in Regional meetings and Service Line meetings, as necessary.  The successful candidate will have demonstrated interest in working in acute and PICU services, and a commitment to evidence-based interventions, multi-professional working, and service-user involvement. 


The Priory Hospital Middleton St George operates a two-tier medical on call rota and this post includes a non-residential consultant on-call commitment at 1 in 7.
