Oliver House School is an independent specialist day and residential school for boys and girls aged 6 to 19 who have mild, moderate and severe autistic spectrum conditions and associated complex learning needs and challenging behaviour.

Our aim is to bring about the best in every young person to enable them to achieve positive experiences and progress according to their own individual abilities. The desired outcome is for young people to achieve success in accredited qualifications and to gain increased levels of independence to enable them to maximise their strengths, abilities and ambitions.

We have an exciting opportunity for a Cook who will be responsible for planning, cooking and serving meals ensuring all activities and operations comply with operational standards and statutory regulations.

This role is a Part-time (35hours/week term time only ) . The expected start date is beginning of September 2018.

Reporting to the School Manager, the successful individual will oversee the planning, preparation, cooking and presentation of the food, as well as administrative tasks to ensure that costs are monitored, stock is ordered with minimal wastage, and that all health and safety legislation is adhered to. The School Cook is supported by a Kitchen Assistant (20 hours per week).

Oliver House School is an independent school, which is part of the Priory Group. The school currently serves between 20-30  Young People with autism and challenging behavior  (ages 7-19 ) in the dining room and approximately 40 staff per day.

Currently all of the young people have a hot meal offering but there are a range of dietary requirement for individual young people .The successful candidate will have experience of catering  for vegan, dairy free, nut free, vegetarian and Halal diets.

Not all the children attend the dining room every day, so numbers vary from approximately 60 to 80 including staff. Staff are offered a sandwich and soup for their lunch due to the demand of the dietary needs of the young people.

You will have a flexible attitude to the role with a focus on the young people’s needs and understanding approach.

The ideal candidate must have:

  • Up-to-date knowledge and understanding of food hygiene requirements
  • An understanding of health and safety at work, particularly with regard to catering
  • Experience producing meals for large groups on time and to budget
  • Ability to monitor costs and liaise with suppliers.
  • Knowledge of food allergies and special dietary requirements

For all roles we require a minimum of two references.  References provided must cover the last 3 years, or you are applying to work within our Children’s Homes we will need to request all references from where you have worked with either Children or Vulnerable Adults.
